NORDEN, Calif. – Search teams at Donner Ski Ranch in eastern Nevada County have recovered the body of an unidentified person after a Monday morning avalanche, sheriff’s officials said.

A man called the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office shortly after noon Monday, reporting that a friend of his had not returned as planned, and he feared they may have been caught up in an avalanche that occurred near the ski resort located at Donner Summit sometime around 9:30 a.m., said NCSO Sgt. Bob Jakobs.

Surrounding ski resorts were called to help search for the missing person as Nevada County deputies and search and rescue crews began to comb Donner Ski Ranch.

“Search crews have just located the body of somebody,” Jakobs told The Union newspaper shortly before 2:30 p.m. Monday. “All we are releasing is that the search teams have located the body of an individual. They are working to continue their search efforts.”
