BREAKING NEWS: Watercraft accident at Lake Tahoe kills two children
Two cousins died today at Lake Tahoe’s South Shore when their rented jet ski hit a wake and struck another watercraft, breaking its steering column.
The victims, a 15-year-old girl and a 6-year-old boy were found face down in the water about one-quarter mile north of Ski Run Marina after the two collided with another cousin, 15, who sat on an idling Waverunner, authorities said.
The 15-year-old is from Barstow, Calif., and the six-year-old from Hayward.
Witnesses estimated the two were traveling 20 miles per hour when they bounced off a wake and collided with the cousin, said police Lt. Terry Daniels.
Authorities said the Waverunners, SR-1 models, were rented from a nearby marina. California law states 16 years of age is the minimum to rent watercraft while 14 is the lowest age in Nevada.
All three children were wearing life jackets, authorities said.
The two victims were transported to Barton Memorial Hospital where they were pronounced dead at 2:44 p.m.
Coroner Pete Van Arnum said there wasn’t much bleeding and said an autopsy will reveal whether they drowned or suffered internal injuries.
