An apparent broken fire hydrant caused severe flooding this morning in South Lake Tahoe with reports of at least a foot of standing water at Emerald Bay Road and in the vicinity of Roger Avenue near the Burger Lounge.

A stretch of the road has been rerouted since about 9:20 this morning after the river pushed berms and snowbanks into the roadway, according to witnesses and officers at the location.

“There’s water everywhere. It’s like a big river,” said Dan Brown, a system technician for Charter Communications who was working in the area and saw the water rise.

South Lake Tahoe, Caltrans and South Tahoe Public Utility maintenance crews continue to work at the location, trying to move snow away from drainage areas to allow the water to recede.

A broken fire hydrant, which is thought to be the cause, has been turned off. However water mixed in with the snow has worsened the flooding, witnesses and authorities at the scene said.

Traffic has been diverted around the area at 13th Street, according to South Lake Tahoe police.
