Roger Sukkar watched helplessly Wednesday as fire crews fought to keep his house – and two months of renovation work – from going up in flames.

Lake Valley Fire District and the South Lake Tahoe Fire Department responded to a house fire Wednesday at the 1925 High Meadow Trail.

The fire started in the basement of Sukkar’s two-story home. Sukkar had been soldering some water pipes under the house, according to Lake Valley Fire Battalion Chief Brian Eakin.

“He was using a torch and something combustible caught on fire and it just flashed,” Eakin said.

Neighbor Kevin Dawes said Sukkar had been renovating the house for two months.

“I came out the front door and saw the house on fire,” Dawes said. “He (Sukkar) tried to put the fire out with a shovel and a hose but it got out of control and we called 911. I sure hope there isn’t a lot of damage because he put a lot of work into that house.”

Eakin said firefighters were able to get the blaze under control quickly, with the flames mostly confined to the bathroom above the fire’s starting point.

“Through the rest of the house it is just heat and smoke damage,” said Eakin, who described the loss to the home as moderate.

“He was soldering under the house and the insulation caught fire,” he said. “LVFD and SLTFD’s quick response limited the amount of damage to the home.”
