Burglary suspects nabbed
South Lake Tahoe police arrested two people on Thursday, believing at least one of the suspects may be involved in a string of commercial burglaries in the South Shore area.
Officers caught the suspects after a break-in at the Ski Run Laundromat early Thursday morning. During that break-in two coin-operated machines had been pried open.
The officers tracked the suspects, Robert Norval Kelley, 26, and Shannon Smith, 22, both of South Lake Tahoe, at a motel. The pair were found to be in possession of burglary tools and property stolen from another motel, said South Lake Tahoe Police Lt. Martin Hewlett.
The pair were arrested on suspicion of second-degree burglary and taken to jail.
During the investigation, Hewlett said that Kelley is suspected in at least 10 separate burglaries of businesses over the past few months.
Smith has been booked into El Dorado County Jail and has been charged with one count of second degree burglary and conspiracy, Hewlett said.
Upon booking, Kelley will be likely face multiple felonies involving the rash of crimes he is suspected of committing, Hewlett said.
Because of the number of burglaries under investigation that involve the suspects, the police department is seeking information about Smith and Kelley. Anyone who has information is asked to contact police detective Mark Tappen at the South Lake Tahoe Police Department, (530) 542-6100.
