Bus driver of the year offers students more than a ride

Emily Craven

Every year Lake Tahoe Unified School District honors one bus driver.

This year’s school bus driver of the year is Linda Robinson, a South Shore resident of 30 years. In June she completed her sixth year as a bus driver for the district. She not only drives school buses, she trains new drivers behind the wheel.

She said she enjoys her job and everyone she works with.

“The kids are the most fun part,” she said. “After you learn the routes, they are really what it’s about.”

A bus driver’s job also involves supervising the children, grades kindergarten through 12. She believes it’s important to learn the names of all the children as quickly as possible and offer them lots of attention.

“Some of them don’t get it where they come from,” Robinson said. “One has to look to the good kids – they deserve as much attention as the ones who are always causing trouble.”

Bus drivers are responsible for a number of other duties as well as driving the school bus and looking after kids.

Robinson said winter driving is a feat within itself.

“We all put on our own chains,” she added.
