American Historic Inns, a lodging guidebook publisher, rated the Black Bear Inn among 2004’s Top 10 California Bed and Breakfast Inns.

The list was chosen by 8.2 million households checking out the selection on line.

The Black Bear Inn, located on Ski Run Boulevard, is owned by Jerry Birdwell and Kevin Chandler.

Sierra Pacific can recover its costs

The California Public Utilities Commission authorized Sierra Pacific Power to recover $8.3 million in costs for fuel and power purchased for its 45,000 California customers. Eighty percent of these users reside in Lake Tahoe.

The CPUC’s action reported last week means the typical residential customer using 650 kilowatt hours of electricity per month will see an increase of $9.33 or 13.4 percent. The rates will become effective Dec. 1.

Sierra Pacific Power reported last week substantial earnings gains, amounting to $90.6 million in profits for the quarter ending Sept. 30.

Unemployment drops in Nevada

Nevada’s unemployment fell to 3.6 percent in October, the lowest rate in the state in 25 years.

In comparison, the nation’s jobless rate is 5.5 percent.

Harveys, Caesars receive awards

Harveys Lake Tahoe and The Forum Shops at Caesars Tahoe were among in the new and expanded businesses in 2004 working to enhance Nevada’s tourism economy. They will receive Tourism Development Awards at the annual Governor’s Conference on Tourism in Reno Dec. 7, Lt. Gov. Lorraine Hunt announced last week.

Awards will be given to 105 companies during a reception at the Reno Hilton hotel-casino.
