All evacuation orders lifted for Callahan Ranch fire

Update as of Tuesday, Nov. 12 at 6 a.m. – At approximately 10:16 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 11, Truckee Meadows Fire & Rescue received reports of a brush fire in the Callahan Ranch area, in the vicinity of Roan Trail and Galena Canyon Trail. Firefighters arrived to a fast-moving wildfire in medium to heavy wildland fuels, namely sage, timber, and understory.

While cool temperatures prevailed, winds were gusting as high as 50 miles per hour, spreading the fire quickly and creating spot fires as far as a quarter mile away.

Evacuations were immediately implemented, impacting approximately 3,000 residents on the east and west sides of Callahan Road and areas north of Mt. Rose Highway adjacent to Callahan Road.

Winds decreased significantly in the early afternoon, followed by rain, which provided some relief to firefighting efforts.

Close to 20 fire and law enforcement agencies quickly mobilized to the scene, and nearly 200 personnel were assigned to firefighting operations.

One primary residence was lost, along with multiple outbuildings. No injuries have been reported.

Forward progress of the fire has stopped, and crews are working toward full containment. The fire is estimated to be 100 acres but this is expected to change once it is mapped. The cause is under investigation.

All evacuations have been lifted, and residents can return home. However, some road closures will remain in the Callahan Ranch area. NV Energy has restored power to the area. Fire crews remained on the fire overnight mopping up hotspots and securing the fire line.

Update as of Monday, Nov. 11 at 2:30 p.m. – State Route 431 has reopened and the Montreux evacuation has been downgraded.

Fawn Lane and Callahan Rd remain closed.

Update as of Monday, Nov. 11 at 12 p.m. – Additional areas have been included in the evacuation order. All of Montreux Golf Course is now included in the order.

RENO, Nev. – Washoe County has issued an evacuation order for the Callahan Ranch area, encompassing part of the Arrowcreek and the Galena areas. The evacuation line runs right up to Montreux Golf Course.

According to Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District, “Callahan Fire is wind-driven, with fast rate of spread. Multiple agencies are responding.”

According to the National Weather Service, there is a Lake Wind Advisory in effect in the Tahoe basin until 7 p.m. with crests into the valley.

The evacuation center is located as South Valleys Library.
