Camp mentor training starts

Provided to the Tribune

Great Basin Outdoor School is seeking high school and college students to mentor fifth- and sixth-graders at Camp Galilee on the east shore of Lake Tahoe. Training for the camp leadership opportunity is scheduled Jan. 15 and 16 at Camp Galilee and the $35 fee includes the use of snowshoes, lodging, training, transportation and food.

Participants will snowshoe, learn about winter ecology and youth leadership and have an opportunity to enjoy the beautiful Tahoe scenery. Children will learn about the Nevada snowpack, winter adaptations of animals and plants and how we can safely enjoy the winter season. Bring warm layers, hats, gloves, boots and sleeping bags.

The dates of the camp are Jan. 13-14, 15-16, 18-19, 23-24, 25-27 and 30-31 and Feb. 2-3, 7-8, and 9-10. Additional trainings and programs will take place in the spring. You may volunteer for whichever sessions fit your schedule.

Mentors gain leadership skills, learn environmental, earth and life science in a fun way, gain insight into career choices – great for those thinking of careers in teaching and recreation, get great references, earn community service credit and make new friends.
