Car seat checks offered

Child car seats are installed incorrectly 85 percent of the time.

Tahoe-Douglas Fire Protection District will hand check seats for free on Saturday at its Round Hill Fire Station from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Incorrect car seat installation causes 500 deaths a year, experts say. People trained in installation will make sure equipment is not outdated and show parents or caregivers how to strap in a car seat.

A child restraint is considered out-of-date if it is more than five years old or if it has been in a vehicle during an accident.

Statistics show traffic accidents are the No. 1 cause of death for children 14 and under. Anyone with questions about Saturday’s inspection can call (775) 588-3591.
