Caregiver sentenced for slapping disabled man

WESTMINSTER, Calif. (AP) ” A caregiver was sentenced to 90 days in jail on Monday for slapping a mentally retarded man nearly two years ago.

Patrick Solis, 23, of South Gate pleaded guilty to felony false imprisonment and misdemeanor battery in a Westminster courtroom. Solis will begin serving his sentence March 21.

Solis was arrested after he was captured on a cell phone camera slapping a 30-year-old man in a restroom at Jossen Vocational Academy in Anaheim in April 2006. The man, who has the mental capabilities of a 2-year-old, is seen shrieking and cowering in fear, prosecutors said.

Also arrested in the case was Michael Douglas Rama, 25, who recorded that attack. Rama pleaded guilty last month to a misdemeanor count of permitting a dependent adult to be injured. He is scheduled to be sentenced on April 18.

Both men had been charged with committing a hate crime based on the victims’ disability, along with other charges, but the charge was dismissed last October.
