Cats die in Stateline fire

Michael Schneider

A Kahle Drive apartment gutted by fire Sunday was doused by apartment residents before the Tahoe Douglas Fire Department arrived.

Chief Bruce Van Cleemput said three apartment residents used an internal house hose to put out most of the fire at the Lake Park Apartments. The fire began shortly after 2 p.m.

Two of the residents were taken to Barton Memorial Hospital with smoke inhalation and a third was transported to the hospital with a cut on the hand. According to Van Cleemput, about eight cats were lost in the fire, however, three or four more were revived by firefighters.

Three fire engines and a battalion chief showed up to finish extinguishing the fire. Two ambulances and Douglas County Sheriff’s deputies also responded.

Preliminary damage estimates to the one-bedroom apartment ran at about $75,000, according to Cleemput. The cause and origin of the fire were unknown as of Sunday.
