Celebrity Golf discussion on TDVA agenda

Progress towards a community sponsorship package to keep the Celebrity Golf Championship at Stateline will be discussed on Wednesday by the Tahoe-Douglas Visitors Authority Board of Directors.

The meeting begins at 6 p.m. at the Lakeside Inn & Casino.

Individual casinos are expected to step forward with contributions toward the sponsorship effort, said TDVA spokesman Steve Teshara.

In addition, the TDVA will consider a contribution of its own of up to $500,000.

About $2.5 million is needed to replace Isuzu’s name sponsorship, which ended following the July 1998 event. NBC has agreed to pick up the slack for 1999. Ongoing efforts to find a new name sponsor for 2000 have not yet been successful.

Those in the South Shore tourism industry want to ensure the event stays at the Edgewood Golf Course due to the promotional value of the televised event.

The TDVA, which is beginning work on its 1999/2000 budget, will consider two budget versions. One would decrease the dollars in the discretionary marketing fund in order to contribute toward the Celebrity Golf Championship community sponsorship. The second scenario, based on budget plans before the sponsorship issue arose, leaves the marketing fund intact with nothing for the sponsorship.

Also on the agenda is a discussion on the TDVA Strategic Marketing Plan for next year.
