SANTA CLARA, Calif. ” A severed fiber optic cable has left thousands of people in Santa Clara, Santa Cruz and San Benito counties without cell phone, Internet and landline service.
Santa Clara County spokeswoman Joy Alexiou says Morgan Hill, Gilroy and San Martin are among the areas affected.
AT&T says it’s aware of a cut in the area and has repair crews out.
Verizon Communications spokesman John Davies says about 50,000 of its landline and Internet customers are without service, mainly in the Morgan Hill and Gilroy areas.
Alexiou says people with 911 emergencies should go to a nearby hospital, firehouse or police station. The county has people at those locations with communications radios and the Sheriff’s Department has doubled patrols.
