Census surveyors sought

In February, the United States Census Bureau will be hiring more than 100 people in the South Shore area to help in the counting of America’s population.

Every 10 years, the census records the nation’s population through a survey sent in the mail. If the respondents don’t return the form, a team of enumerators, or census-takers, are sent to the residence to get the information.

Mostly it’s door-to-door work, said Dave Mulvihill, Census Office manager in Reno.

“It’s really a twofold job,” he said. “There’s updating the lists and leaving census material at the door.”

About 70 positions will be available in the Douglas County area and more than 300 in El Dorado County.

“Mostly it’s in the daylight hours but the schedule is flexible and can be part-time,” he said. “It’s ideal for stay-at-home moms or retired people.”

Census-takers are paid $11.25 per hour in Douglas County and $11 an hour in El Dorado County. Crew leaders in both counties, who oversee about 10 census-takers each, make $12.75 and $12.50, respectively.

The jobs, which start at the end of February, last between four and 10 weeks.

To qualify, applicants must be at least 18 years old, have a high school or equivalent diploma and pass a basic skills test. They also must have two forms of identification and pass a background check.

“People need to sign up now because it can be up to three weeks for the testing and the clearance check to come through,” Mulvihill said.

Call (888) 325-7733 for testing times in Nevada and (530) 295-2960 in El Dorado County.
