Chains mandatory over passes

The California Highway Patrol is requiring motorists traveling through the Sierra on Interstate 80, Highway 50 and Highway 88 to chain up.

A storm arriving in the Sierra is expected to drop 1-2 feet of snow in the elevations above 5,000 feet.

According to Safe Travel USA, chains are mandatory west of Truckee, above South lake Tahoe and over Carson Pass.

Chains or snow tires are required between Truckee and South Lake Tahoe and over the Mount Rose Highway between Incline Village and Galena.

A high wind warning is in effect on Highway 395 through Washoe Valley, so high profile vehicles should go around.
