Chains required on U.S. 50

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – As of 9:30 a.m. chains are required over Echo Summit on U.S. Highway 50. The traction control devices are required on all vehicles except 4-wheel drive vehicles with snow tires from Twin Bridges to Meyers.

A winter weather advisory is in effect until 11 a.m. this morning. Two to 4 inches of snow is expected at lake level, with 4 to 8 inches expected above 7,000 feet, according to a warning issued by the National Weather Service in Reno at 3:55 a.m. Wind gusts of up to 90 mph are expected over Sierra ridges.

“Snow is expected to pose an inconvenience to travelers,” according to the warning. “Roads will become slick and hazardous. Motorists should slow down and use caution.”
