Child seat inspection May 23

Tahoe-Douglas Fire District and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office will conduct a free child safety seat inspection from 1 to 4:30 p.m. May 23 at Zephyr Cove Park, U.S. Highway 50 and Warrior Way, in the upper parking lot.

Parents, caregivers and relatives are encouraged to have their child safety seat inspected and the presence of the child who rides in the seat is highly recommended. Trained personnel will be on hand to check seats for safety defects and recalls and to demonstrate to the parent the correct installation of the child restraint in the vehicle and answer any questions. Parents are reminded that seatbelts are designed to fit adults. Most children who are under 80 pounds and/or 4 feet tall should be seated in an approved booster seat.

–Motor vehicle accidents are the number one cause of death for children 14 and under.

–Correct use of child restraints could prevent approximately 500 deaths per year.

–85 percent of child restraints inspected are misused, with an average of two errors per seat.

–Children under 12 years of age should be seated in the back seat whenever possible.
