PORT HUENEME, Calif. ” The USS Stockdale is nearly ready for duty.

The Navy’s newest destroyer is being christened Saturday at Naval Base Ventura County Port Hueneme (Wy-NEE’-mee) and will be homeported in San Diego where it will undergo tests and be mission-ready early next year.

The 9,200-ton, 509-foot-long ship honors the late Vice Adm. James Stockdale, the decorated Vietnam War airman and seven-year prisoner of war best known in civilian life as Ross Perot’s running mate in the 1992 presidential race.

Stockdale is one of the most decorated officers in Navy history with 26 combat medals and awards, including two Purple Hearts and four Silver Stars. He was on a combat mission in 1965 when his plane was shot down over North Vietnam. He spent more than seven years in captivity.
