City calls for impact study on vacation rentals

As South Lake Tahoe considers additional ordinances and regulations for vacation home rentals (VHRs) inside city limits, it has put out a request for proposals (RFP) to conduct a study on the subject.

The impact study report would take into account the impacts, benefits and disadvantages of vacation rentals in the city.

City Manager Nancy Kerry stated by email on Friday that the study would take an academic and holistic approach to the subject.

“It is anticipated the results of the study will enable everyone to have a more complete understanding of VHRs in our community,” Kerry said.

With almost 1,800 vacation rentals in the city, the city has updated its permitting and enforcement policies since it began its VHR program in 2003. According to the RFP, the council requested the study to determine how much impact the growth has had on South Lake Tahoe.

Some of the things suggested in the RFP include changes in community demographics, the character of residential neighborhoods, quality of life, employment and income levels, lodging inventory supply and demand, a housing market analysis, demand for public services and a total economic impact the VHR industry has on the city.

Proposals are due by Aug. 26 at noon and potential bidders would need to register with the city asa vendor The proposed bid award date would be Sept. 15.
