City Council and Airport Commission set to OK airlines

Commercial air service to South Lake Tahoe Airport is nearly ready for take off.

Operating agreements between the airport and commercial carriers Allegiant and Tahoe Air today will come before the South Lake Tahoe City Council and the Airport Commission for approval.

“It’s been a lot of years in the making and to see it finally happen is just amazing,” said Janis Brand, airport management assistant. “I would hope that it will become extremely successful because it’s good for the community in terms of the economic benefits, as well as for the environment because it will significantly cut down on driving in the basin.”

If the two airlines are awarded operating agreements and deemed qualified carriers for South Lake Tahoe Airport, the council will approve departure slots for each company in accordance with the Lake Tahoe Access Plan.

“(According to the Plan) we are allowed 10 departures during the summer,” Brand said. “We will issue the slots as per the carriers’ requests.”

Brand said Allegiant requested three departures per day, Tahoe Air requested five.

The council will also approve a concession agreement with Hertz Rent A Car, which left the airport in 1996 when commercial air service was discontinued.

What: Joint City Council and Airport Commission meeting

When: Today, 6 p.m.

Where: City Council Chambers, 1900 Lake Tahoe Blvd.
