City Council race off to a slow start

Michael Schneider

Only one person has jumped into the race for one of three available South Lake Tahoe City Council positions since open filing began July 13.

Brooke Laine is currently the lone candidate for council. El Dorado County is verifying signatures on her paperwork.

To run for city council, a candidate must get signatures from 20 eligible voters.

The seats held by Hal Cole, Kevin Cole and Margo Osti will be up for grabs this November. Tom Davis’ and Judy Brown’s terms don’t expire until 2000.

November’s council election will be an “at large” election. The top three vote-getters will be successful in their push for city council positions.

Of the three incumbents, only Osti has announced her intentions not to run for another term. Hal Cole has said he would lean toward running again to see various Stateline redevelopment projects come to fruition. Kevin Cole has not announced his intentions.

The last day to file for council seats is Aug. 7. Information on filing for the election can be obtained at the city clerk’s office at 1052 Tata Lane.

The city clerk position, held by Angela Peterson, is also being contested this November, as is the office of city treasurer. Both Peterson and Treasurer Stephen Wysong have announced their intentions to seek reelection.
