City manager search narrows to handful of applicants

The search for a South Lake Tahoe city manager is narrowing.

Bob Murray, an independent contractor hired by the city to conduct the recruitment, has selected a handful of applicants from the pool of 70 to advance to the next level of competition.

The City Council met in closed session Thursday to interview nine candidates who made it through the first cut. The interviews will continue Friday.

Mayor Tom Davis said the two-day process will culminate with a selection of the top three or four candidates to advance to a final interview.

Davis said he’ll be looking for someone with experience in redevelopment, media relations, employee relations, an environmental background and leadership skills.

“We’re going to narrow (the number of applicants) down to three or four and have a second interview on March 17,” Davis said. “By the following week, we should be in a position to make an offer.”

Once the offer is made, Davis said it will likely be at least two months before the manager starts work in South Lake Tahoe.

“If they have to give notice at another job, then it could be at least 60 days,” he said.

About 70 people applied for the approximately $95,000-per-year position vacated by Kerry Miller in October. Miller, who served 12 years in South Lake Tahoe, left the position for a city manager job in Encinitas, Calif.
