Classroom innovation fostered by grants

Dina Gentry
El Dorado County Office of Education Communications Director

As part of the El Dorado County Office of Education’s commitment to excellence in education, Superintendent of Schools Jeremy M. Meyers announced that school teachers in El Dorado County will soon be eligible for 21st Century Classroom Innovation Grant funds.

Responding to career and higher-education expectations, the purpose of these grants is to assist teachers in better meeting the learning needs of students in a rapidly changing world. The grants are meant to stimulate and perpetuate creative thinking of teachers in the county’s 15 diverse school districts.

Typically, grants are awarded to school sites and/or districts, so the design of these classroom grants is uncommon.

“It is not often you hear about classroom level grants,” Meyers said. “We believe it is critical to capitalize on both emerging technologies and new approaches to education and assessing student learning – further investing in the amazing work many teachers are already doing.”

Building on a crucial partnership, funding for these grants will come from the EDCOE and the El Dorado Community Foundation. Building on this partnership, EDCOE is also providing much of the technological support for the foundation’s “group funding” program and the May 6 National Day of Giving campaign.

“We’re looking to fund 10 to 12 classrooms at $10,000 to $12,000 per classroom, because we believe the expertise needed to transform our classrooms already exists in the county. We do not need corporate America and multi-billion dollar technology companies telling us how to be innovative in the classroom, because our knowledgeable and imaginative educators are the true experts,” Meyers said of the initial round of grants to be awarded for the 2014-2015 school year. “These innovation grants will help bring together the impressive experience of longtime teachers with the sweeping changes afoot in education. It will also be an opportunity for newer teachers to share their fresh visions of teaching and learning.”

EDCOE is seeking grant applications from teachers who meet broad criteria, and proposals from individual teachers and collaborative or team-based projects will be considered.
