College looks to change from quarter to semesters

Sara Thompson / Tahoe Daily Tribune

Lake Tahoe Community College is discussing whether to switch to a semester schedule or keep its quarter schedule.

The LTCC Board of Trustees will hear a report on the issue, but take no action, at its April 14 meeting.

The reason the issue came up is because the college is switching its operational software, and needs to be set up for either a quarter or semester schedule.

Out of 110 California community colleges, 107 are on semester schedules.

A survey was sent to the college’s classified employees in March and 44.3 percent preferred a compressed semester schedule, 39.9 percent preferred the quarter schedule and 15.9 percent had no preference.

The report summary stated that “staff has many questions and concerns which would need to be fully addressed it is decided to move to the compressed semester system.”

To gather more input from the community, a letter was sent to both chambers to find out how changing from quarters to semesters would impact businesses around town. A student survey was also conducted, and both sets of information will be presented at the meeting.

The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. April 14 in Room L104 at the college.
