Comedy at The Improv with Howie Nave: Nick Youssef, Sandy Danto perform this week at Lake Tahoe
Special to Lake Tahoe Action
This is shaping up to be a good year for Nick Youssef — this week he’s a headliner after being in the middle slot his past three visits, which means he’s doing well in his native Los Angeles (he better be ambitious there if he wants to make a name for himself in this line of work). Fun fact: The last time Youssef was here he brought his bike up and cycled around the lake in under five hours.
As a comedian, Youssef started out early because he knew exactly what it was he wanted to do. In his relatively short career he’s been seen in numerous national television commercials and has done guest spots on sitcoms such as NBC’s “Animal Practice,” the popular video game “L.A. Noire” and on “Last Call with Carson Daly.” Youssef’s first stand-up album, “Stop Not Owning This,” debuted in the top five of the iTunes comedy charts and was featured in the January 2015 edition of Esquire Magazine. His latest album (which you can get on vinyl), “1982,” was quick to rise to No. 1 when it released.
When not on tour, Youssef co-hosts the Occasionally Awesome podcast on the All Things Comedy network with fellow comedian Kevin Christy, writes articles for Esquire and Paste magazines and is seen regularly performing stand-up at The Comedy Store, Laugh Factory and Improv comedy clubs in Hollywood.
While studying at Indiana University, Danto took summer classes at the famed Second City comedy troupe in Detroit. His summer course proved handy, and he started working at National Lampoon as a character actor while writing, directing and producing comedy shorts.
He relocated to Hollywood and then appeared on “MadTV” and Comedy Central’s “Mash-up.” Danto also co-hosted the web series “Fat Guy Nation.” His constant road work paid off and he built a name for himself when he landed an opening slot on a tour with ‘90s icon Pauly Shore (being a paid regular at the Comedy Store didn’t hurt).
When not on the road Danto spends time in his L.A. apartment writing jokes, scripts and brainstorming for other projects between his gigs. One such project is his “Jet Ski Hot Tub Road Trip (on a Yacht).” You can contribute to Sandy’s latest endeavor on Kickstarter: He says, “I want to make my own comedy special in which I do a tour of shows on a yacht trailed by an 18-wheeler being driven across America.” Laugh if you will — to date, Danto has 272 backers that have pledged thousands of dollars!
In addition to “MadTV,” his television credits include an HP commercial. Danto also starred in the indie feature film “Funny Fat Guy” as well as “Tar.” He has also given brilliant performances in several failed pilots and indie movies that will never see the light of day.
The Improv at Harveys takes place Wednesdays through Sundays at 9 p.m. Learn more at http://www.harveystahoe.com.
