Commission hires new director

The El Dorado County Children and Families Commission hired a new executive director in July. Steven Thaxton took over for interim director Kathi Walker, who is the coordinator for the Child Care and Development Planning Council of the county office of education.

This is the first full-time director for the year-old commission.

Thaxton said his first priority was to meet with each commissioner and to get acquainted with the strategic plan set up to spend $1.3 million of tobacco money per year in the county.

As the executive director, Thaxton is responsible for overseeing the progress of the strategic plan and the proposal process. He will also serve as liaison between the state and county commissions and will coordinate media campaigns set up by the state.

Thaxton has a master’s degree and 20 years of experience in early childhood education. He has been a HeadStart director and an elementary school principal.

“This is a wonderful opportunity,” Thaxton said. “I think we’re going to be able to support a lot of programs for young children and families. I’m very excited.”
