Community events mark month of public awareness

Tahoe Daily Tribune staff

April is Child Abuse Prevention and Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

The South Lake Tahoe Women’s Center invites residents to take part in community events this April to show their support of local survivors of child abuse and sexual assault, to raise awareness about the impact of these crimes locally and to promote healthy, safe and respectful relationships in our community.

Red and white flags will be in front of the Women’s Center all month ” each flag represents one school-aged girl in South Lake Tahoe. One in four flags is red, indicating the girls who will experience sexual assault in their lifetimes. This exhibit exposes the true impact of sexual assault and the sheer numbers of local girls who will be victimized. Stop by the Women’s Center for a blue and teal ribbon to wear as a sign of support for the safety of women and children in our community.

The South Lake Tahoe Women’s Center is collaborating with the South Lake Tahoe Police Department to offer self-defense classes for elementary school children and parents; South Tahoe High School Friday Night Live Club on a teen-focused Take Back the Night March and Party; hosting an Ernie’s Burger Night sponsored by Paul and Judy Bruso; and organizing a bowl-a-thon sponsored by Tahoe Bowl.
