The Heavenly Patrol Fund was established seven years ago after patroller Rich Elmquist was nearly killed in an avalanche while doing control work in Small Slide, a tree ski area. The injuries he sustained changed his life. The first Heavenly Patrol Fund fund-raiser was held at the California main lodge to raise money for Elmquist and his family.

Since then the fund-raiser has grown tremendously. Thanks to the help of many local retailers, restaurants and hotels, the group raises thousands of dollars each year for Special Olympics, South Lake Tahoe Cancer League and various other local charities. The Heavenly Patrol Fund reserves a portion of the money to assist patrollers who are hurt in the line of duty and for continuing education such as avalanche and snow science courses.
