Community will be involved in picking TRPA director

While the decision about who is to be Jim Baetge’s successor as executive director of the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency will ultimately be up to the 14 members of the authority’s governing board, there will be public involvement in the process.

TRPA’s governing board Wednesday discussed how it would find his replacement at its November meeting.

Baetge, who has served in TRPA’s top position since May 1994, plans to leave the agency in January 2000 for medical reasons.

Officials said Wednesday that members of the community – from groups such as the Lake Tahoe Transportation and Water Quality Coalition, which is composed of the League to Save Lake Tahoe, Lake Tahoe Gaming Alliance, Tahoe Douglas Chamber of Commerce and other organizations – and a special committee formed by TRPA could narrow the list of applicants down. The 14-member board would interview the finalists during a public hearing.

When Baetge was hired, 134 people applied.

Steve Teshara, co-chair of the Lake Tahoe Transportation and Water Quality Coalition, said he supported the approach and believed the next executive director must work with the community as Baetge has.

“We believe the nest executive director must be firmly committed to the partnership approach,” he said.
