Competitor misses jump, dies during ski event
A 37-year-old Stockton man died Sunday after landing on his head during a recreational “big air” competition at Kirkwood Ski Resort.
John Glenn Edens failed to negotiate the approach to the jump, according to Alpine County Sheriff’s Department. Spectators said the man was ejected out of his skis at the top of the jump.
Edens lost consciousness and then stopped breathing after he was taken to the resort’s medical clinic, Assistant Sheriff Bob Tucker said. Efforts to revive Edens failed and he was pronounced dead at 3:45 p.m.
The event was part of Kirkwood’s spring event “Jammin’ VI,” which ended Sunday. The big air event was held every day at 1 p.m. and was open to anyone 18 years and older.
