Cougars overpower Vikings in tournament finals

Steve Yingling, Tribune sports editor

South Tahoe High put together the fast start that it coveted Friday in the finals of the Spanish Springs baseball tournament, but it wasn’t enough to cover for what ensued.

Host Spanish Springs hit seven home runs, including six out of the park, en route to a 19-4 championship victory in Sparks.

The Vikings took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on Max DeLallo’s two-run single. Ricky Braun and Rigel Garman singled to start the rally.

But the Cougars scored three runs in their half of the first frame. Spanish Springs, however, didn’t break it open until scoring six in the third inning and 10 in the fourth.

“We ran into a buzzsaw team. They put on an offensive show for me,” said STHS coach Don Amaral. “Our only pitcher who could hold them down with was Tyler Sharp, our freshman.”

Braun sent the Vikings home on a good note by smacking a 400-foot-plus homer to left center in the top of the fifth inning.

“I just think we swung the bat so much better being outside for three consecutive days. They threw their ace today, and we hit him,” Amaral said.

South Tahoe (6-15 overall) won’t have to wait long before playing its next big game in the Reno area. The Vikings are scheduled to meet future Mount Rose League rival Truckee on Monday at Aces Ballpark. First pitch is at 4 p.m.
