County dealing with housing problem

Susan Wood, Tahoe Daily Tribune

Finding and supplying affordable housing for residents to buy or rent has challenged more than the city of South Lake Tahoe.

El Dorado County also has the quandary on the front burner.

Following up on its series of recent workshops, the Housing Authority will be accepting applications on a waiting list from Oct. 18 to Nov. 18 for those who may qualify for Section 8 housing assistance.

Out of the 375 tenants now receiving funding assistance in the county, 72 live in South Lake Tahoe units, county housing manager Joyce Aldrich said Thursday.

Eligibility for funds is determined by family size and income.

Applications will be available next Friday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. at the Art Building at 3062 Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe. A representative will be on hand to field questions and help with the applications. Otherwise, those interested parties who are unavailable on Oct. 18 may pick up and drop off the forms at the county’s Department of Community Services, 3368 Lake Tahoe Blvd., Suite 202; South Lake Tahoe.

“We’d like to see more people in low- to medium incomes taking part,” she said, adding rising housing prices have dramatically affected homebuyers on the West Slope too.

“It’s so amazing what’s going on out there. What’s happened to our market has prevented people from buying,” she said.

Aldrich said the county has calculated affordable housing as under 80 percent of the median income, which stands at $57,300 a year. That 80 percent a month — $45,840 — comes out to be $1,146 a month.
