Couple arrested in South Lake robbery

Staff report

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – A Rocklin, Calif., couple are in custody after they allegedly robbed a South Lake Tahoe woman late Monday night.

Kathryn Mundt and Michael Barnett were arrested a short time after the 10:30 p.m. robbery. According to police, the 18-year-old victim was walking alone in a residential neighborhood when a man jumped out of a vehicle and threatened her with a knife and demanded her purse.

The victim gave up the purse and the man got back into the car and the female drive sped away.

The woman met her friend in a parking lot and called police. South Lake Tahoe officers Travis Cabral and Ric Martinez responded, and immediately broadcast a suspect and vehicle description to other officers and agencies in the area.

A California Highway Patrol officer heard the broadcast description and realized he’d just issued a citation to a woman for running a stop sign in the area of the robbery.

The officer was able to provide a name, description, address and vehicle information, including the license plate number, to Cabral and Martinez.

A short time later the vehicle was spotted by Martinez and the occupants were detained. Mundt, the female driver admitted to the robbery and told officers that she and Barnett had committed the robbery to obtain gas money. Barnett did not admit to the theft, but was positively identified by the victim as the man who took her purse at knife point. The knife was recovered in the suspect vehicle.

Moorman had stopped the suspects just after they had committed the robbery, but just before it had been reported.

Both Barnett and Mundt were booked into the El Dorado County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bail.
