Thomas and June Reyes of South Lake Tahoe will observe their 50th wedding anniversary on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14. The couple, who were wed Feb. 14, 1953, at Reno, Nev., had their marriage blessed at St. Mary’s Church in Stockton, Calif., a year later on Feb. 14, 1954. Family and friends gathered to help them celebrate their first anniversary and the renewal of their marriage vows.

Tom and June met at Edison High School in Stockton in 1947. June moved to Lodi, Calif., to finish high school and they later re-met at Delta Junior College in Stockton. Tom went on to the University of California, Berkeley, while June went to work. They dated until 1953, when they were married and started their family. Tom received his master’s degree in zoology from the University of the Pacific at Stockton, and in 1959 he received a job offer to teach in the Philippine Islands for the Department of Defense Dependent Schools. The family spent seven years at Subic Bay, P.I., until 1966, when Tom was transferred to Stuttgart, Germany, for five years. He taught at the Stuttgart American High School while June was school secretary. He then was transferred to Argentia, Newfoundland, Canada, for one year and Goose Bay, Labrador, Canada, for four years and spent the rest of his tour in Ramstein, Kaiserslautern and Bitburg, Germany. All the while — 26 years — June was able to work as a secretary at the schools with DODDS.

During 30 years in education and administration for the Department of Defense Dependent Schools, the couple traveled to many wonderful countries and enjoyed a fabulous life. They met many wonderful people who over the years are still great friends. They retired at South Lake Tahoe in 1989, where Tom is a teacher’s aide for Lake Tahoe Unified School District and June is a typist at the Tahoe Daily Tribune.

After four children, 10 grandchildren, one great-grandchild and another on the way, June and Tom plan a 50th celebration sometime this summer, when friends and family will come to Tahoe to volunteer at the Celebrity Golf Tournament.

“We enjoy our time together, but we still spend time on our own. Tom is spending a week in Las Vegas with our daughter and I’ll be attending some Giants baseball at spring training in Arizona,” June said.

The couple agree that the way to stay together for 50 years is, “Very carefully; trusting one another and being honest to each other. A happy life is a job to work at each and every day.”
