SOUTH LAKE TAHOE — A woman was arrested on charges related to car theft Tuesday after officers investigated a car theft call from hours earlier.

California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers arrested Sarah Elizabeth Downey, who was reportedly on felony probation out of Nevada County.

The arrest came at about 3 a.m. when two South Lake Tahoe CHP officers were on routine patrol traveling on Lake Tahoe Boulevard just west of Third Street.

The officers saw a white Ford sedan matching the description of a stolen vehicle from earlier and made a U-turn to overtake it, but the driver, Downey, reportedly made an abrupt turn onto southbound Third Street.

Downey allegedly made several turns in an attempt to evade the officers, but eventually came to a sudden stop in the Matterhorn Hotel parking lot.

The officers searched the vehicle and reportedly found a loaded handgun, as well as drug paraphernalia within the passenger compartment.

Downey was arrested at the scene and later booked into the El Dorado County Jail.
