Update on Eldorado National Forest wildfires: Table Fire grows to 250 acres; Ice Fire close to 100% containment

Tactical fire operations will continue today in an effort to corral a fire burning in a remote area near Ice House Reservoir. Meanwhile crews are nearing 100 percent containment on a much smaller fire also burning in the Eldorado National Forest.

Firefighting efforts have been underway since early Monday morning when winds activated the Table Fire in a remote part of the forest about 3 miles northeast of Ice House Reservoir.

The lightning-caused fire was first reported Sept. 8; however, it remained small — about an acre — and inactive for more than a month. During that time fire officials monitored the area and took indirect preventative measures, including the creation of check lines.

On Thursday crews worked on line preparation on the east, west and south sides of the fire, according to an incident update posted online Friday morning. The north direct line is already complete.

According to the report, 200 personnel are working on the fire, which is at 250 acres and 20 percent containment as of Friday morning.

In order to remove fuel between the prepared line and the fire, firefighters started tactical burning operations on the northeast corner Thursday. Tactical burn operations will continue today beginning on the east side and then the west side.

Increased amounts of smoke are expected and the tactical burns also are expected to significantly increase the burn acreage today.

The fire is in a sheltered location so the predicted winds on Saturday are not expected to have a significant effect, according to the incident report.

Meanwhile, no significant changes have been reported on the Ice Fire burning 2 miles west of the Ice House Road and White Meadows intersection. The blaze, which was first reported Tuesday, is at 29 acres. Containment, according to a Friday morning update, is at 95 percent.

Thirty-two personnel are fighting that fire.
