Crime log: Five-finger discount discontinued

A thirsty 19-year-old was caught attempting to swipe a bottle of Captain Morgan’s rum from Safeway by hiding the liquor in his pants, the South Lake Tahoe police officers said.

Watchful employees made sure the planned five-finger discount was unsuccessful and the young man was arrested Friday on charges of burglary and violation of probation, an officer said.

In other news:



— Four driving-under-the-influence arrests were made at a California Highway Patrol and South Lake Tahoe Police Department checkpoint Saturday from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m.

The checkpoint was located on Lake Tahoe Boulevard, east of Fairway Avenue, and was the first this summer, officers said.



— A 7-year-old boy had El Dorado County Search and Rescue help him down Eagle Lake Trail after he slipped and fractured his wrist while on a hike last week with his mother, El Dorado County sheriff’s deputies said.

The Sacramento boy was driven to Barton Memorial Hospital by his mother after hiking a mile down to their car, a deputy said.

— Unknown suspects took $400 from a residence on the 3000 block of Birch Avenue, South Lake Tahoe police said.
