Crystal Bay Club and Casino finds solution to housing crunch

KINGS BEACH – The owner of the Crystal Bay Club and Casino has found a solution to the housing crunch on Lake Tahoe’s north shore.

Tome Feutsch is proposing to use undeveloped resort property to build a six-story structure that combines a 200-unit hotel with a 200-unit affordable housing project.

“Everybody’s talking about doing something for the housing situation, but nobody’s doing anything,” he said. “I think we can offer a plan where everybody wins.”

The structure would be built just west of the resort’s 500-space parking lot. In Feutsch’s initial concept, offices and physical plant would occupy the bottom two floors, the hotel would take the top two, and housing units would be sandwiched in between.

He said the housing rent, would be lower than anything else in the immediate area.

Feutsch is enthusiastic about the idea, which came to him about two weeks ago. The key to its success, he said, is that most of the planning-related elements are already in place.

If the project continues, Feutsch said he will eventually have to ante up a proposal to present to the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency.

TRPA Public Information Officer Pam Drum said, “Of course TRPA can’t really comment on the idea until a plan is presented. But like any application we would compare it to the land’s planned usage.”
