BUENOS AIRES, Argentina – France’s Stephane Peterhansel has moved into the overall lead in the Dakar Rally after winning the third stage of the race.

Spain’s Carlos Sainz, driving a VW, finished nearly six minutes behind Peterhansel, in a BMW, on Monday in the stage from Cordoba to La Rioja in north central Argentina to remain second overall.

Qatari driver Nasser Al-Attiyah slipped from first to third in the overall standings after finishing the stage more than 10 minutes off the pace.

Tuesday’s fourth stage is from La Rioja to Copiapo in Chile.
