CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Senior forward Casey Nogueira recorded the fourth hat trick of her career and the 11th multi-goal game overall to lead the third-ranked North Carolina women’s soccer team to a 5-2 win over ninth-ranked Wake Forest in the NCAA quarterfinals Frday.
With the win, UNC advances to the NCAA College Cup for the 25th time in the past 28 years. The Tar Heels will meet Notre Dame on Dec. 4 in the NCAA semifinals in College Station, Texas.
Senior goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris played the entire 90 minutes. Freshman Hannah Daly of Stateline is a backup goalie for the Tar Heels who saw action earlier in the postseason.
UNC improved to 21-3-1 with its ninth successive victory while the Demon Deacons saw their season end with a 16-6-2 mark. The 16 wins equaled the most in a season in Wake Forest history and the quarterfinal appearance was the first for the Deacons. Meanwhile, UNC finished the season undefeated at home, going 13-0 at Fetzer Field.
The Tar Heels jumped out to a 3-0 lead at halftime, outshooting the Demon Deacons 7-1 in the opening 45 minutes. Both teams scored twice in the second half when the two teams both had six shots. UNC ended with a 13-7 edge in shots, and the Tar Heels scored five goals in their seven shots that were on frame. Five of Wake Forest’s seven shots were on the mark, with UNC making three saves.
