Daly’s role unclear heading into national champs’ season opener

Sophomore goalkeeper Hannah Daly’s role with defending national women’s soccer champion North Carolina is unclear heading into Friday’s season opener at Texas A&M.

Daly, a Whittell High School graduate, was listed as backup to starter Anna Sieloff on North Carolina’s website but is making the trip to College Station, Texas, for the 5:30 p.m. opener. Sieloff is a freshman keeper out of Troy, Mich.

North Carolina coach Anson Dorrance indicated in June that Sieloff and Daly could split halves early in the season.

“Hannah will challenge for a starting role, and Anna, a national youth team goalkeeper, has a lot of potential,” Dorrance said. “If it’s close enough, I’ll go back to where they’ll split halves. One of them will start, the other will come in at the half and then start the next game.”

Dorrance said that keepers could share time until the arrival of the ACC Tournament.

North Carolina is ranked No. 1 by the National Soccer Coaches Association of American and second by Soccer America.

The Tar Heels will meet Michigan State at 8:30 a.m. Sunday in College Station.

Soccer fans can follow action in both matchups via the gametracker at TarHeelBlue.com.
