Day of firsts for Whittell ski team

Whittell High enjoyed one of its finest days in the Tahoe Basin Ski League on Tuesday, winning a boys’ giant slalom race and finishing second in slalom at Sierra-at-Tahoe.

“That was spectacular,” said Whittell coach Patrick Kelly. “The other coaches were saying that it is the first time they’ve seen us win a league race.”

With two seconds and a first place in the final three boys’ races, the Warriors may have snagged the league’s second spot for the upcoming state meet. That won’t be determined until Wednesday.

The Warriors’ eye-popping day was triggered in the GS by Austin and Hughston Norton finishing second and third, respectively.

Whittell was even better in the slalom with Hughston Norton winning and Simon Nikles placing second.

“We had a strong team today. A win in that league is huge,” Kelly said. “I figured if we had everybody there, it would be a good day.”

The South Tahoe boys reportedly finished first in slalom and second in GS to wrap up the regular-season league title and the No. 1 seed to state.

Results from the doubleheader of racing weren’t official as of late Tuesday. Refer to this Web site on Wednesday for an update on the races.

Some of the skiers will compete Thursday in the division championships at Heavenly Mountain Resort.
