Dayton author receives award

Fox Carlton Hughes of Dayton, Nev., recently received the Mom’s Choice America Silver Medal award for his children’s book, “Rainbow Rhino.” The book also was chosen by the education department in France to help young French children learn to read and write in English.

Last month, Catherine Cortez Masto, Nevada’s attorney general, chose “Rainbow Rhino” as the central theme for her outreach program in Nevada concerning anti-bullying. Hughes donated 30 books that were delivered by the outreach team to selected schools throughout the state, which Cortez Masto and other members of the committee read aloud to the classes.

Hughes will give a talk at the Gold Hill Hotel at 7:30 p.m. April 1, where he will share experiences about his life and his extremely varied career from music to animation, with an emphasis on his positive attitude about achieving anything you want – regardless of your age.

“Rainbow Rhino” will be available for purchase in the upstairs library at Gold Hill, and he will gladly autograph copies. There also will be a supply of his cartoons and character drawings from many of the children’s books he has illustrated for such companies as Walt Disney, The Learning Company, Putnam New Media and many others.
