DCHS speaker to discuss history of fire departments

Historian and author Steve Frady will be the historical lecture speaker at Douglas County Historical Society’s Sept. 12 meeting.

Frady is a retired police and fire public information officer for the city of Reno. He is a former editor of the Nevada Appeal, a past chief and an Exempt member of the Virginia City Fire Department, and a founding Trustee and current vice chairman of the Comstock Firemen’s Museum that opened in 1979. He will discuss the history of fire departments of Virginia City and Gold Hill and will feature his book “Red Shirts and Leather Helmets.”

The lecture will begin at 7 p.m. at the Carson Valley Museum and Cultural Center, 1477 Highway 395 N., in Gardnerville. Admission costs $3 for general admission and is free for members of the Historical Society are admitted free.
