Deadpan laughter this week at The Improv with Rocky LaPorte
Rocky LaPorte, a standup veteran with a truly authentic New Yorker deadpan delivery style returns to Lake Tahoe this week, along with first-timer Ron Morey. The comedy club runs Tuesday through Sunday, with shows starting at 9 p.m. except Saturday where there are two shows, at 8 p.m. and 10 p.m.
He’s back and now with the writers strike over Rocky is resuming the work on his television pilot. He has been working nonstop though during his writing hiatus performing both here in the States and abroad. Rocky is very distinctive what with his unmistakable accent and his hilarious yet endearing delivery.
Both his performances on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” (which received a standing ovation) and his own “Comedy Central” special has opened up many an avenues for Rock. Tim Allen saw Rocky perform on The Tonight Show and proclaimed him his “favorite new comic” which lead to Rock getting cast in the Disney remake of “The Shaggy Dog.”
In fact Allen wants Rocky to tryout for the sequel to the very successful “Wild Hogs” which not only starred Allen but also featured William H. Macy and John Travolta. Before the movie and Showtime special Rocky was on the road (as usual) performing in Canada for The Just For Laughs Comedy Tour.
Rocky has generated his time using his comedy overseas entertaining the troops in Iraq. One of his performances was turned into a Showtime special called “Patriot Act: a Jeffrey Ross Home Movie” in which fellow comics Jeff Ross and Drew Carey were captured unabridged performing in an area of the world that needed an excuse to laugh. Rocky’s also part of an all-Italian lineup called “The Godfathers of Comedy” which is slated for release later this year on Comedy Central.
Rocky truly loves the instant feedback that comes with performing in a front of an appreciative audience and loves performing up here. He considers Tahoe a nice break from the daily grind of southern California’s dream factory and too often flakes that populate this business.
He is one of The Improv’s most requested comics and tries to get up to Tahoe as much as possible if only for the occasional visit over at the house to just hang.
Rocky’s Comedy Central Special still airs frequently and was voted most popular comic on that network (Dane Cook came in first). Rocky is a comic’s comic who not only works the road constantly but is imitated often. We consider him to be one of the most gifted comics working today.
It’s time to celebrate the fact that after being here for seven years comedian Ron Morey comes to the lake. He is such a delight to witness on stage. What a great pairing this week with the likes of Rocky.
Morey’s energetic style has earned him a nomination to the list of the top five comics in the country by The Entertainment Business Journal and when you see Ron you’ll see why. His show includes not just the funny stuff but also a mixture of characters, impressions and music highlights that he incorporates into the act.
Ron also donates his time and talent entertaining the troops for the USO in such places as Italy, Greece, Bahrain, and Kuwait. Ron has been featured on NFL Films, PBS, A&E and even on Snoop Dogg’s MTV show, “DoggyFizzle Televizzle.”
He’s been on The Improv circuit for years now but why it took so long to get him up here well, let’s just say the wait is finally over. He’s opened for such diverse acts as George Lopez, Tracy Morgan, Ellen DeGeneres and D. L. Hughley. Welcome to Lake Tahoe Ron!
