Defensible space inspections planned

Rob Bhatt

South Shore firefighters will pound the pavement this summer to try knocking down fires before they begin.

In conjunction with the Tahoe Re-Green Project, the South Lake Tahoe Fire Department and Lake Valley Fire Protection District will inspect homes in targeted risk areas.

The goal is to let owners know what they need to do to maintain “defensible space” around their homes in the event of a wildland fire.

Lake Valley crews intend to begin their inspections at the end of the week in neighborhoods along North Upper Truckee Road between U.S. Highway 50 and Echo View Estates.

The South Lake Tahoe Fire Department will conduct similar inspections for residents on Gardner Mountain, Tahoe Island and along Pioneer Trail beginning July 7.

The selected South Lake Tahoe and Lake Valley neighborhoods border forested areas and are considered to be at greatest risk of danger in the event of a wildland fire.

Inspectors will look for build-up of dead trees and brush, and pine needle accumulation and advise landowners on removing such potential hazards.

Firefighters will leave a checklist identifying hazards at homes where dangers exist.

Experts recommend about 30 to 100 feet of clearance around a home to protect it from a forest fire.

The Tahoe-Douglas Fire Protection District conducts such inspections by request.
