Delays put Meeks’ opening off months

Hold on to your garden plans.

Meeks, The Builder’s Choice, has bumped the opening of its new store in Meyers to June 1.

The home improvement center had planned to open at the former Supply One site on April 1.

But Branch Manager Mike Willford said the Sacramento-based retailer’s internal remodeling job is taking longer than anticipated because of the condition the 20,000-square-foot structure was left in.

The retailer is negotiating with the El Dorado County Building Department to get the building up to code.

Willford and some of his South Shore staffers make trips to the Meyers store to prepare for the long-awaited opening.

“We’re anxious to get open, too,” Willford said, acknowledging the eager gardeners awaiting the new store’s arrival on the scene.

The retailer, which runs a store in the central part of South Lake Tahoe, has filled 30 of its estimated 35 positions needed to staff the new store. Willford will manage both stores.

Meeks hopes to add on to Supply One’s adequate sales volume and beef up the lumber section.

Supply One moved out of its lease on 2970 U.S. Highway 50, after filing Chapter 11 in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Reno on all nine stores last October.

Rumors of the home improvement center moving out of its South Shore store in town are untrue, owner Bill Meeks said.

Meeks has been family owned and operated since 1919.
