District Attorney’s Office creates DUI prosecution team

Staff Report

The El Dorado County District Attorney’s Office has formed a new prosecution team dedicated to drunken and drugged driving.

The team will focus on repeat offenders and those involved in fatal or injury accidents, according to a statement from the office.

“The new Vertical Prosecution team will aggressively investigate and prosecute the most serious DUIs in our county in order to properly punish DUI offenders, and ultimately, to save lives and make the roads a little safer for the residents of El Dorado County,” District Attorney Vern Pierson said in the statement.

The purpose of the program is to prevent impaired driving and reduce alcohol and drug-impaired traffic fatalities and injuries. In 2012 six people were killed and 63 people were seriously injured as a result of DUI crashes in the El Dorado County, according to the statement.

Funding for the team comes from a $313,325 grant by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
