Don’s Apple Butter Tart with Almonds

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 cup powdered sugar

1 stick butter (4 ounces)

1 egg

1 1/2 tablespoons water

Mix flour, powdered sugar and butter until crumbly. Mix in egg and water until dough is smooth. Chill until ready to use.


2 pounds of apples, peeled and sliced

1 tablespoon cinnamon

2 tablespoons Calvados (apple brandy)

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1 1/4 cup almonds, lightly toasted, cooled, and then ground

Toss all ingredients together to coat apples well. Set aside.


1/4 cup butter

1/4 cup shortening

1 teaspoon vanilla

1 2/3 cup flour

1/2 cup granulated sugar

Rub all ingredients together until pea-sized pieces form. Set aside.

Assembly: Roll out dough to 1/4-inch thick between two pieces of plastic wrap or waxed paper. Lay in 10-inch tart pan (a pie tin or cake pan will do). Fill with filling. Sprinkle on topping. Bake at 375 degrees for 35 to 45 minutes until filling is bubbling and coming through the topping a little.
